INCI or Internation Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients is the standard naming system used worldwide so that ingredients are easily identifiable regardless of what region the product is sold in.
Common Allergens in Cosmetic Products
fragrance & Essential Oils
many fragrance components such as Limonene, Linalool and Geranoil are known allergens and may be included in essential oil or parfum blends.
Most manufacturers will be able to inform you of what allergens are present in the fragrance oil or essential oil and what allergens need to be displayed on your label depending on what percentage it is used at.
Preservatives & Stabilisers
various chemical stabilisers have been known to trigger irritation in some users, it’s always best to check the label if you have a known allergen
Natural extracts
botanical extracts and plant derived materials may contain allergenic compounds
Important Tips for Users
Patch test first
Even if products are designed for sensitive skin, we would always suggest patch testing on a small area of skin before widespread application, especially if you know you are prone to allergic reactions
Check for food derived allergens
Some cosmetic ingredients can be derived from food sources e.g nut oils. These will be listed in the INCI but are not always obvious common names.
